To remember: our breathing air consists of 21 % oxygen, 78 % nitrogen and 1 % other gases. The biggest problem with air is its high percentage of nitrogen.
The known phenomenons nitrogen narcosis and decompression illness are linked directly with this fact. While scuba diving the human body saturates with nitrogen. The maximum possible dive time also called no-decompression limit is given from this nitrogen saturation. When diving with enriched air = Nitrox, the percentage of nitrogen is reduced. This results in the following listed advantages:
- increase in safety because of less nitrogen in the human body
- longer possible dive times = more enjoyment of the dives at the same cost
- more dives per day possible
From own experience and reports of other divers we also know that Nitrox divers:
- are less tired after the dives
- are warmer during the dives
Especially dive beginners profit from diving with Nitrox because their buoyancy control will not be very good yet. Too quick and unintentional ascents are better tolerated by the human body then when diving with compressed air. |
